Arta is built on ancient Ambracia, on the left bank of the Arachthos River, and rises amphitheatrically on the northwestern foothills of the hill, which from ancient times to today has been called Peranthi.
It is adorned with its Byzantine churches, its castle, its clock, remarkable neoclassical buildings, and above all, the symbol of the city, its legendary bridge, which is known both for its architecture and for the myth of the sacrifice of the master builder’s wife.
